Don't let the title of this blog fool you. You'll find lots of science related posts but as with all things, changes happen and there is so much more knowledge worth sharing. Thanks for stopping by. I hope some of the knowledge shared here will help you to improve your classroom practice.Heather Kaiser, EdD.http://www.blogger.com/profile/10362404144407606881noreply@blogger.comBlogger92125tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-473717534394463664.post-23795129969376376822020-08-10T12:00:00.002-04:002020-08-10T14:24:49.206-04:00Making Connections and Building Relationships - Part 1

Recently I recorded a microcast for my Teacher Think Aloud series that spawned lots of other thoughts on the topic of making connections and building relationships with students online. Since my microcasts are short bursts of thought, I decided to elaborate a bit here in this blog post. Most likely, I will end up recording a full length podcast on the topic and may even include some guests who will share their thoughts and ideas. If you are interested in being a guest on my podcast, please use this form to sign up.
<table align="center" cellpadding="0" If you have ever had an assignment in an online course that required you to respond to a prompt and then respond 2-3 sentences to other class participants, you will understand what I mean. With effective design, the discussion board can become a place students want to visit. Rather than requirements for participation on the boards, invite students to comment. Set some ground rules for appropriate behavior, much like you would in your brick and mortar classroom. The discussion board encourages students to pass each other notes unlike the traditional classroom where that practice is frowned upon.Quite often the teacher can enable controls that allow moderation of posts. This is helpful as students first begin posting. Once students prove that they understand how to post while maintaining appropriate community standards, that feature can be modified.

Although I highly recommend developing community standards with your students, here are some examples:

1. Be nice to each other.

2. Try to stay on topic. Hi-jacking someone's post to start your own topic isn't nice. It would be better to start your own discussion post if your response is off topic from the original post.

3. Comments should be helpful, informative, and supportive.

4. Avoid spamming.

Note: Spamming a discussion post is the act of adding multiple comments in rapid succession that do not add value to the conversation.

My next tip will be available soon.

You may think this post will be about optimal learning and/or teaching conditions. If so, think again. I am geeking out in this post to share an activity my 5th grade students have been working on with conditional formatting in Google Sheets. Full disclosure: Before I started my teaching career, I spent several years programming databases and I LOVED IT! (most of the time)

Recently, my students and I have come across various activities and puzzles in Digital Breakouts that relied on a variety of conditional formatting and functions. The students were intrigued and I was pretty sure my database background would reveal the "magic" going on behind the scenes. After a little digging, I was able to figure out the process digital breakout creators were using and began developing ideas for helping my students learn the process too.

We have been working on learning to solve the Rubik's cube. We've also been creating mosaic designs that can be created with the cubes. I decided to have students create a Google sheet that would reveal the hidden mosaic design if someone can answer a few questions correctly. I built a Google sheet as a demo with the students and recorded a screencasting with text support. Students replicated my sheet. Once they had the basics, they were free to start designing their own projects.

During this activity they learned about the conditional if this, then that function. This function was used to create the foundation for conditional formatting that would control the color of specific cells in the mosaic design.

Here are a few screenshots to show some of the skills that students were learning.

Common misunderstandings and problems:

1. I will need the same number of functions as I have colors in a mosaic.
False: The function statements control which cells are revealed. Cells do not have to be revealed as blocks of similar color.

2. I typed the function but I am getting an error message.
Make sure that the cell being referenced in the function is one of the cells holding an answer to a problem. Make sure you do not have any extra commas.

If you can create the Google Sheet with the "Right Conditions", you will have designed a hidden image that can be revealed when someone correctly answers a few questions. More importantly, you will have learned some of the foundational skills necessary to utilize conditional statements in spreadsheets, databases, and other computer applications.
It has certainly been a while since I shared on the topic of a Family STEM Night. This week we hosted a really great evening for families to engage in high energy STEM activities. Perhaps some of the energy came from the vertical alignment centered on NC Science Standards of Force and Motion. Everywhere you turned there were objects in motion and families caught up in conversation with each other and the teachers. This post will be short and sweet. I am including some photos and captions along with some of the tweets from the evening. Perhaps readers will find some inspiration or an idea at just the right time. As the night progressed, I worked intentionally to #hashtagwithpurpose so that all the great ideas would become part of the bigger community of educators cataloging the NC Science Standards. Take a look at all the great learning! Then join the conversation on Twitter.

I guess that the #OneWord movement is nothing new, but this is the first year I have opted in. My word for 2019 #ambition. Why ambition? Because even though I may still appear to be an overachiever who finds extra hours in the day to keep growing my #PLN and learning about #edtech trends, I feel less ambitious than I was when I first started this blog. Somewhere along the journey, I think I really did slow down a bit.

Ultimately, my #OneWord is about a sense of accomplishment.
It would be easy to choose #OneWord and do nothing with it, but I am determined to regain my #Ambition this year! January is off to a good start, but it is early. I am not posting this to say, "Hey look at me and everything I am doing." I am posting this to acknowledge areas where I am being ambitious and reflect on ways that my #ambition still needs work.

Ambition around the house...

YUCK! Housework - seriously not my favorite thing. Plus, it is a never ending battle. My #ambition here is limited but I will say that keeping the dining room table clear, the kitchen sink empty (at least 3 days a week - Yes that it progress), and folding laundry as soon as it comes out of the dryer are tops on my "ambitious" list for 2019.

Ambition at work/school...

Paperwork. It is never ending. Just like the housework. In my role as AIG consultant/teacher, I keep a daily log that tracks how I am spending my time. In the past, it was easy to get behind on this and I would find myself playing catch up. That often meant re-creating an entire month of activity. What a chore! #Ambition at work means I will open up my log daily and enter the activities before heading home.
Another beastly work chore is communicating the progress of my students with their parents. This is beastly because I serve between 80 and 100 students during the course of the year and every nine weeks, I send progress reports, rubrics, and artifacts to their parents digitally. This is super time consuming! Going digital doesn't always = getting done faster! Fortunately I found a really awesome mail merge template for Google Sheets. I'll be podcasting about it soon. Aside from the fact that some of the email addresses I entered were incorrect, this worked like a gem! It takes some #ambition to locate tools that help you 'work smarter NOT harder' but it is so worth it when you do. Now that this template is set up, the only thing left to do is correct the inaccurate email addresses and switch out the links to student files when 3rd quarter rolls around. #Ambition can pay off big rewards!

Ambition as a learner...

I will never stop learning. In fact, I don't even equate my desire to constantly acquire new knowledge with #ambition most of the time, but I probably should. Last year, I introduced the YouCanDotheCube program to my students. They were hooked immediately and I found myself thinking, for the first time in my life, that I might actually be able to learn to solve the cube too! Lo and Behold... fast forward... Jan 14, 2019... I have committed the algorithms to memory and my best time is 3 minutes and 30 seconds. Nowhere near a record and some of my students can absolutely solve it faster, but I definitely exercised my #ambition on this one! I'll be sharing some of my strategies for learning this in a podcast too.

More learning...
I have weighed the pros and cons of seeking Google Educator Certification for quite some time. In fact, I agree with much of what Bill Ferriter (@plugusin) has to say on the matter of badging BUT I also agree with Kyle Hamstra (@kylehamstra) who takes a somewhat different stance on badging.

Ultimately, it boils down to "MY WHY." Why should I do it? Until recently, I didn't really have a reason to actually sit down and take the time to become certified. Google Educator Certification isn't a free program and they aren't sending you any promotional materials aside from your badge credentials. That actually increases the value over some programs that require minimal effort and offer plenty of swag and sometimes free upgraded subscriptions, along with the badge.

My real reason is quite simple: Having the credential of Google Certified Educator Level 1 demonstrates that I really do know my stuff when it comes to Google for Education. That's it. Plain and simple. Everyone that sees it knows that I have a solid understanding of GSuite and could probably help other educators make better use of these tools. Most people who really know me would say that they didn't need to see this credential to know that I can help them answer their #edtech and #Google related questions. But what about the people who don't know me well? What about people who stumble across my blog or my website? How would potential employers or those considering engaging my consulting services know that about me? So, I mustered up the #AMBITION today and I took the test. Will I do level 2? Well, level 1 was not difficult for me, but it was time consuming even though I finished with time to spare. But, yes, I will probably seek Level 2 and eventually the trainer certification. Who knows, I may even go so far as to seek the #innovator level. It all just depends on how much #ambition I have.

Ambition as a collaborator...

I will close this blog post with my thoughts on this area. Twitter is my go to space for #collaboration. Find me @technotchr. My blog, website, and podcasting ventures pale in comparison. In 2019, I plan to focus more of my #ambition in spaces where I can think and share more deeply and use the content that I create as a springboard for even more collaboration on Twitter.

I think there are a few other areas I could have mentioned but my #ambition for this post is waning. If you have #oneword for 2019, I'd love to hear about it in the comments. Perhaps something I said has sparked a thought that could lead to a conversation. If so, please take a moment to share your thoughts and help me add value for other readers through our conversation. It would be especially interesting to hear from others who have chosen to pursue or have avoided Google Educator Certification. I'd love to hear your "Why."
I closed this brief but important post with the following paragraph:
"<span style="background-color: #dadadc; font-family: "coming soon"; font-weight: 700;">I hope you will join me on this journey. This blog and the other information on my website are intended to help other teachers benefit from my experiences. If you want to make an impact on your students through meaningful, inquiry-based science simulations then you've definitely found a point of reference. Make sure you click to follow this blog so you don't miss a single moment of the journey."
As 2019 begins, I am hoping once again to return to the regular routine of blogging. For me, that means taking a closer look at where the original journey led. The majority of posts on this blog were accumulated during the first two years (2011 and 2012). I already knew that was what I would find. Just as I wrote in that first post, the journey takes twists and turns. In 2012, my journey turned down a road that would ultimately lead to earning my doctorate in education, specializing in e-learning. Although I am proud of that accomplishment, sharing my knowledge and experiences on this blog was one of the things that I was unable to make time for. <span style="background-color: #dadadc; font-family: "coming soon"; font-weight: 700;">

While blogging had become a habit in 2011 and 2012, it was not a habit that returned easily once I completed my doctorate in May 2017. Nearly two years have passed and I have only published 5 blog posts since then. From time to time, I return to this blog and lament over the status while considering reasons for my failure to post.

1. My PLN on Twitter is really useful to me. I get great ideas there. My questions are answered quickly. There is more interaction on Twitter.

2. My classroom experience changed. In 2011, I was a STEM lab teacher in grades 3-5. Now I am a gifted consultant teacher in grades 3-5. The learning experiences in my classroom have changed and I'm not sure how to connect them to the original purpose of this blog. Maybe that shouldn't matter, but I know this has been one of the biggest barriers.

3. Writing blog posts take more time. People like visuals. For a blog to be worth visiting, the content needs to be relevant and visually appealing. This takes time. A lot more time than posting on social media.

Will 2019 be the year I fall back into my habits of blogging more often? I guess only time will tell. This blog post serves as a kind of mile marker. My acknowledgement that I am planning to turn the path back in the direction of sharing more often through this format that allows the author to go into greater depth than a single tweet. My proclamation that the work I am doing is still worth sharing with others and that it is worth the time that it takes to share my knowledge with those who will take the time to read about my experiences.

So, if you happen to be one of the few people still subscribing to my blog or if Twitter brought you here and you managed to read all the way to the end, Thank You! I hope to have something to share with you regularly this year. What's more, I hope you will stop by and comment from time to time. I thrive on collaboration and networking with other educators. Let's make each other better!
Hi there! I'm back and this time I have a new purpose for writing. Purpose is so important! It's not the only thing that makes a difference though. I also have something worth writing about.
I'm getting better about getting my ideas out of my head and daring to share them with others.
For example, earlier this year I made a suggestion that some of my colleagues and I try a book study. Lo and behold... some of us have selected a book

What's more, the timing was absolutely perfect for those of us who wanted to go one step further to join in with #IMMOOC Season 4. I like to think of myself as the kind of teacher who is on the cutting edge. One of my first teacher evaluations has a comment from the principal stating "she likes to try new things." I remember thinking, now why couldn't he just say she is innovative? Yup 20 years ago I saw myself as an innovator and I've really never stopped "trying new things" even though the structure of schools does not always make that easy to do.

So here I am trying #IMMOOC.
First of all, I want to say that if you are reading this and are not participating in #IMMOOC, you should try searching the hashtag on Twitter and at the very least do some "lurking to learn." If you are reading or have read "Innovator's Mindset", "Empower", or "Learner Centered Innovation" consider joining the conversation!

One of the things I am really impressed by is the organization of the study. Tonight was the big kickoff with a live YouTube streaming event. Throughout the week there will be Facebook live and Twitterchats. Each participant is encouraged to complete readings and respond to various prompts via blog posts. The really great part is that participants can complete as much or as little as they are able. The structure balanced by flexibility makes a good fit for busy teachers. Just a little nudge in the right direction can make a world of difference.

For this blog post, the nudge consists of two prompts.

I found this prompt to be very interesting right now because our school district is strongly considering a school calendar change that focuses on the number of minutes of instruction as opposed to the number of days students spend in school. That tells me that how we are spending time with students is really important. We've had a slogan in the district "Every minute counts." The slogan is part of an initiative to reduce student tardies. Again, how we spend time obviously matters. Here's the rub... do we want the students to spend their minutes being compliant or do we want to empower them to learn? The pervasive mindset remains fixed on compliance and the act of "doing school" as opposed to empowerment.

This prompt is also relevant to me because I chose to home school our daughter this year and one of the main reasons was time related. It turns out that much of the compliance learning can be done in much less time. The good news is that leaves room for empowering students to learn about things they are interested in. Now, I realize that home schooling provides all kinds of freedoms we do not have in public schools and I am not trying to start a debate between home schooling and public schooling. Here's an interesting fact: Not only does my daughter have plenty of time to learn about things she is interested and passionate about but I happen to know a group of about 20 some fifth grade students that have found a way to be both compliant and empowered! It began with their teacher. Well, it began with a conversation their teacher and I had about #GeniusHour or 20% time. These kids know what they have to accomplish during the week. They know what type of behavior is expected in certain situations around the school. They take some tests that are mandatory. When all that is done, they get the freedom to explore.

Time is often cited as a barrier to learning. There is never enough time to fit it all in. This is a common complaint and not without a fair amount of proof to support the claim. Educators are often asked to do more with less and that includes teaching more while having less time. But... we have a certain number of minutes and we can make the most of those minutes by empowering our students or we can act with compliance following the same old routine.

Let's face it, inspiring creativity and innovation on a daily basis can be tricky. But like A.J. Juliani said during the YouTube session earlier tonight, "There will never be the perfect situation." So don't wait. He also pointed out that there are lots of obstacles that could stop you along the way but it is to your benefit and really your STUDENTS' benefit that you get out there and take a risk.

But to identify one thing I am doing to make this a daily priority requires some very critical reflection. I am doing many things that I believe helps to inspire creativity and innovation but am I doing them purposefully and on the daily? Yikes. Not sure if I can say yes to that as I write this blog post. But I am doing things and I can probably focus in on something from this point forward and my one big thing that I will do daily. Now, what could that be?

It should be tangible.

I should be able to measure it. Not with a standardized test but with a simple question to myself each day regarding the effectiveness of my "one thing."

It should focus on the students.

Alright, I think I've got it...

My 1 thing...

Give students time. Time to explore. Time to communicate. Time to ask questions. Time to create. Time to spend any way they choose as long as their choices demonstrate respect for other students.

How is this tangible?

The allocation of time is a tangible thing. Minutes set aside each day are tangible. I can hold myself accountable to a specific number of minutes.

How is this measurable?

Simple. Did I give students the time I said I would give them? That is measured with a simple yes or no. How did students use the time they were given? That is measured by observation.

How is this focused on the student?

School has not traditionally been a place where students could choose how to spend their time. Giving students the choice of how to spend some of their time at school is the ultimate way for a teacher to show that she is focused on the student. This gift of time says: The things you are interested in learning are important and worthwhile. I cannot think of a better way to focus on the student than to validate their curiosity, creativity, and encourage innovation.

Last week my students had to "go shopping" for all the fixings for a traditional Thanksgiving meal. Today, I surprised them with a little Black Friday and Cyber Monday Holiday Shopping. I used the same app that I mentioned previously to create a list of items that people are purchasing this year with the actual costs during Black Friday and Cyber Monday. In class, the students rolled a die to determine how much shopping they would do. The number on the die correlated to the number of times that they had to tap the button on my app and buy something.

The room was buzzing immediately! Students were groaning, exclaiming, consoling each other, and generally had great difficulty containing themselves. Further accentuating the event, last week was a short "work week" and student pay day today was only averaging $40. As if that wasn't enough, their mortgages were due today! You can probably imagine that a number of students are in debt following this lesson.

Two basic scenarios played out. First, some students (very few) actually managed to stay debt free. Most students were forced to borrow from their "$1000 line of credit at the bank". The others have maxed out their bank credit and now have even more debt on a revolving credit card with an APR of 21%.

There are plenty of things about the game that are just my complete random selections but the idea behind it remains to teach the students how to balance a bank register and feel the impact of both choices we make in life along with things that are completely out of our control. The idea being that this simulation will make the students think twice when the time comes to decide how to spend their paycheck.
I would like to welcome my colleague Emily Hine as a guest blogger. Emily is a 5th grade teacher at New Century International Elementary School.

Looking for a way to incorporate videos into your classroom, and still hold students accountable? Forgot to print the paper that goes with the video? No problem, Edpuzzle is an awesome tool if you want to flip the classroom and still hold students accountable. Edpuzzle allows you pull videos from other people or include your own videos. If you are looking into flipping the classroom and want to spend most of your time in small group, or even differentiate your learning with different videos, Edpuzzle allows you to spend more time in small group then giving a lecture.

Now, if your anything like me, you are not always satisfied with videos from Youtube, so you create your own. Yes, this does take time, however I was able to video tape myself teaching the lesson on the document camera. This allowed me to pick exactly the material I wanted to use for the lessons, which way I wanted to teach it, and then students were able to follow along. One of the best things about Edpuzzle was that it was all digital. Remember back in the day, when we use to watch a video and had to do the worksheet that went along with the video, while the teacher graded or caught up on work. How many of you only paid attention to find the answers, couldn't record them fast enough, or copied off the person next to you because the sheet was due or you were not paying attention. Edpuzzle , eliminates the worksheet, the video stops where you want to ask a question, and students are prompted to record/respond with their answers into Edpuzzle .

Wow! If they had this 20 years ago! Even better, the teacher doesn't have to look over every sheet to see if students have the right answers because Edpuzzle will help you check the answers if it is multiple choice, or allow you to grade all of the open ended responses. As a teacher, you could easily check who completed which videos, what questions they answered in wrong. There are options for both open ended and multiple choice.

How do I incorporate it, so that I can flip my classroom? Good question! So many people are talking about flipping the classroom, but what does that look like? While the district wanted us to add digital into our classrooms, I taught myself how to flip it and do nothing but small group teaching. My students have a checklist they have to complete by Friday. The checklist includes small group with me for an hour each week, an Edpuzzle lesson where they are introduced to new topics, and then they could have any of the following: Ten Marks, independent practice, global scavenger hunt, task cards, Standard Mastery Assessments, games, etc... This way I am making sure that in small group I am reviewing the previous standard with them, catching little hiccups/ trouble shooting along the way, so the learning gaps are closing by getting so much time with the teacher.

Skeptical? I had a variety of different students that really understood math, but when the final test came, even my struggling students blew the test out of the water. This was my first year, truly flipping the classroom, and the results were worth it.

Do you have a student that misses class all of the time, and they are so far behind? This way they can do the lesson at home and they can still get all of the curriculum. Have students that are more advanced? Pull videos on the next grade level content and allow them to work through lessons at a faster pace. You can individualize the learning by assigning videos to certain students, or you can assign them to your entire class. If you teach multiple different classes, you can assign videos to the class that it belongs with. Going to be absent, or go to a conference? I have video taped my lesson and the students did not miss any instruction while I was away.

If you don't have the time to video tape lessons, no worry. You can pull videos from Youtube, or even Edpuzzle that already have the questions embedded into them, so all you have to do is assign it. Even with my compulsive need to do everything, I did pull some Bill Nye videos as part of their science centers, so that I could pull small group and do remediation.

Summertime is a great time for getting your jam on. How about an online summer writing camp to get your creative juices going? I'm tapping into Boomwriter this summer to offer a fun alternative to traditional summer camps. So many times families have to choose between sending kids to summer camp or traveling together. Well, with an online camp you can do both!

I'm looking for 10 -15 students who have just completed 3rd-5th grade to work together on a creative writing project. I will provide the storystarter and everyone will write their own version of the next chapter. I will provide guidance, feedback, and suggestions for revision. Students will revise and then they will read each other's chapters. Everyone will vote on their favorite version and the next day they will all pick up where that writer left off to start the process again. By the end of the week, we will have a completed story which will be published and shipped to each young author.

This is a brand new type of summer camp for me and I am thrilled to be able to take advantage of technology in this way to work with budding authors across the globe.

If you are interested in learning more or you are ready to register a student for camp, just follow the link to the Writing is my Jam summer camp registration.
Finally, it is here! Some of my colleagues have been after me to write up the details of a simulation that I created last year for teaching financial literacy. Well, now that I have successfully defended my dissertation (yes - I am now Dr. Kaiser 😎), I finally had time to sit down and put it all together.

I will give you a brief overview and then you can go grab the PDF from my website.

The challenge is for students to end the school year "debt-free".

As the teacher, you are going to make this a difficult task - just like IRL (in real life).

There are 2 main costs for starting up this simulation.
1. Journals for every student. These can be composition notebooks, spirals, 3 ring binders, or just some paper in a folder.

2. Purchase the pro version of the Random Name Selector app.
Note: I do not receive anything for promoting this app. Other apps may work but this is the one I used and I thought it was well worth the upgrade fee.

I like to start the simulation during the first week of school. I try to choose certain days of the week and stick to it. For example: Friday is pay day. Monday is a life event. The 3rd Friday of the month is when mortgage and transportation costs are due. In the pictures you can see students tracking their income and expenses.
Have your students taken a benchmark test recently? Do you have a limited time to review the questions with them before turning in the "secure test materials"? Would you like a different way to review that involves the students as leaders and lets you, "the teacher", take a backseat? I've got just the thing... Math Meet-ups. The idea isn't new. It's really the same as stations, centers, rotations, task cards, etc. The big difference is that a student is in charge of each question and does the models their solution for their peers.
WARNING: This took A LOT more preparation than I originally anticipated. BUT... it was really worth it.

First, I created a short video, in Adobe Spark, that all 5 teachers played for the students in order to explain the process. Second, I created a Powerpoint slideshow with timings to manage the rotations from question to question. (3 minutes per question and 30 second transitions).
Step 3 involved assigning the student leaders to a question that they had correct on the assessment.
Step 4 required assigning each student to the questions that they missed in an order that ensured no more than 5 students were assigned to any one question at a time. This was by far the trickiest part of the planning!
Step 5 was the creation of a record keeping sheet personalized for each student to write down the notes as each question was modeled.

None of what we did was very fancy. We put up some posters on the classroom doors so that students would know which questions were being modeled in which rooms. Each student leader had the question number displayed for students to know where to go, as well. Student leaders used a dry erase board and shared their strategies. The other students asked questions and reviewed their own work to see where they went wrong.

At first, things were chaotic. After a couple of rotations, the students knew what they were doing and everything was smooth sailing after that.
Once we finished, the teachers each debriefed in their classrooms and the students overwhelmingly agreed that they preferred the Monday Math Meet-up to a traditional teacher led review. They also gave us helpful feedback to improve for next time. For example the transition time should probably be a little longer to give students who are switching classrooms time to get to their next question.

All in all, this strategy worked out pretty well and we will probably try it again in the future.

I never wanted to learn to play chess. Then a colleague got all excited about the idea that we could both teach a chess unit and get our students together at the end for a real life game of human chess like the wizard chess game in "Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone". I caved in and now I'm learning chess. Surprisingly, I am really enjoying it. Not surprisingly, the kids love it. Here is a quick peek into our classroom today.

Today was the first day that I had them calling out and writing down their moves. Before we could do that, I thought it would be a good idea to label our life size chess board and practice calling out some moves on it. I was being formally observed today because this year is my license renewal year. Nowhere in my plan did I leave room for thoughts of doing anything other than moving up to 5th grade with the most wonderful group of 4th grade students I had the privilege of teaching last year. Thing is, my plan wasn't entirely within my power to control. Sparing everyone the details, let me just say that after 6 wonderful weeks with my students I found myself moving into a new position. We were having a great year! The students had matured and we had fallen into step together as 5th graders. The quality of their work was greatly improved and everything about our year was going great (in our classroom world). Suddenly, I was faced with a decision that may not make sense based on what I have said about my students. Unfortunately, this decision couldn't be made solely on the basis of how perfect things were going with my classroom.

The dilemna: to accept or not to accept a position working as the Academically/Intellectually Gifted Teacher at another elementary school in the district - full time.

My decision: I accepted it for a variety of reasons that I won't bore you with.

The result: I miss my students terribly. They hold a very special place in my heart and always will. I hope that we will maintain contact from time to time some way, some how. That said... I absolutely love my new role! This position has renewed my teaching spirit and I am feeling very creative again. The liberty that I am able to take integrating enrichment opportunities for students beyond the core curriculum is absolutely invigorating. I have so many ideas that I cannot wait to share.

In the first two weeks, I have already been able to jump in and wrap up an on-going unit with the 4th grade students. They were studying archeology and had done a number of research mini projects along with some grid work and imaginary archeological finds. I stretched it a bit and tied it to paleontology (because I happened to have a T-Rex model fossil simulation) using some empty raised beds behind the school. The pictures convey better than my words, so I will leave you with some photos.

Heather Kaiser, EdD.http://www.blogger.com/profile/10362404144407606881noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-473717534394463664.post-56572800639441762792014-07-15T17:17:00.000-04:002014-07-15T17:20:02.968-04:00Summer '14 Camp Digest - Day 2Today students partnered up to work on communication and engineering design skills during a challenge that required one student to give verbal directions to the other in order to replicate a model made from K'Nex. The partners really rose to this challenge and by the end they were asking each other questions for clarification and being very specific in their directions which resulted in successful rebuilds.
This year I am offering 3 weeks for students who were in my homeroom. I limited it to that group because I am looping up to 5th grade with them and want to offer extra support as we prepare to tackle another year.

Each day will be a little different from the others, but there will always be a bit of every subject woven throughout the morning. For instance, today we began with a team work engineering challenge. The 5 students who attended camp today worked together to try to build a house of cards. They found this to be a bit trickier than they had expected. After many attempts, they were able to figure out a few ways that would work for awhile but none of the housed stayed standing for long. We'll try this again and see if they get better with practice.

Our 2nd challenge today was a red solo cup challenge. I found this idea on Pinterest and was really pleased with they way that the kids worked together to line up 3 solo cups and then stack 3 more cups on top using just 1 rubberband with 4 strings attached to it. Check out some of the pictures to see how they did. There are moments when a bit of their teamwork could have included more positive language toward each other so we will work on that. By the end, they were communicating really well and had defined a strategy that was successful!

Other highlights of the day included math games, reading a detective LaRue book, and working on a timeline. One of the main emphases for today was to get the kids talking to each other and learning from each other with as little teacher talk as possible. All in all, I would have to say it was a success.
Stop by tomorrow to read about the next adventure.
How to differentiate for varying levels of spelling proficiency was one of the first things I needed to tackle. Locating spelling lists at different levels was the first task.
There are actually a number of resources available.
K12Reader had a list that suited my needs. This link is for 4th grade but there are lists available for other grade levels as well. This was great because I had students who needed both easier and more difficult lists.
http://www.k12reader.com/fourth-grade-spelling-words/
These lists were easy to download and then add to my class Edmodo library.
Edmodo is an awesome learning platform. With it, I created 3 groups the spelling sleuths, guru's, and spotlight. Every week I attach the appropriate list and send a link for students to copy their words.
At first I used a simple voice recorder app with my cell phone to record the words and loaded the files to Edmodo for students to play back. I was even able to have students complete their spelling test this way.
Later I decided to try Spelling/Vocabulary City.
Using Spelling City, we were completely paperless for our spelling work because there is built in practice activities for students too.

What strategies do you use to differentiate spelling lists? Leave your ideas in the comments section below.

Yesterday I noticed a new message from Edmodo. Did you see it too? I am one of those people you might characterize as an early adopter so you can probably figure that I immediately tested it out. Within minutes and I do mean only a few minutes, I had created 2 snapshots: One for reading and One for math. I had it assigned to my 4th grade class and this morning we gave it a go. The tool has earned an initial 4 star rating in my book.

Pros: quick, easy, aligned to common core, immediate creation of reports that guide instruction by identifying student mastery levels while also offering individualized data screen where you can select a student and review the questions they answered -- truly impressive sets of questions that are randomized to avoid cheating

Cons: some students got "bumped" out or claimed the screen froze (not sure what user error might have caused that or bug in the system even) - even so, easy enough work around... close the tab and reopen the snapshot link then select continue snapshot... not so bad. Students don't seem to be able to go back to a question after they have moved on.

All in all a very nice addition to Edmodo as an online learning environment for blendend learning! Oh and perhaps best of all... this is not part of their App Store... IT IS FREE, built-in, and appears to be fully functional with a sufficient data set!

Thank you Edmodo!!

So... if you use Edmodo and missed this new tool... go get a look at it and try it out for yourself. You'll be glad you did.

If you've already tried it, or once you try it, I would love to know what pros and cons you discovered and how many stars you would give it.

Released just in time for test prep too. I'm HAPPY!! :D

Mrs. Harris is hosting a science teacher blog hop and of course I joined in. One of the main goals for my website and blog is to locate and share great STEM ideas with others so I am hoping it grows and we all can find some new blog sources for great ideas.

If you found my page through the blog hop, please take time to leave me a message. If you haven't seen the blog hop then hop on over to Mrs. Harris Teaches and you can find some other great science blogs or even add a link to your own science blog.
What will you find in some pond water? Pond critters of course.

We had already completed an initial lesson in the classroom. I had scooped a bucket of pond water from my neighborhood and we examined the unicellular and multicellular life of the pond. In fact, this lesson was taught almost two months ago but then we had some signs of spring. The rains came and with it, outdoor recess became a festival of science! My kiddos found a puddle and were completely enthralled with the life of a puddle. They begged me to bring out the microscopes and slides for RECESS!!

Of course, being the teacher who wants to make the kids happy, I gave them exactly what they wanted. Combined with a little mobile technology and we were identifying the organisms in the puddle in no time. We found that one of the most common organisms was the red fly larvae. Perhaps the most exciting moment for the group was when two different organisms were sucked up into the pipette at the same time and a real live food chain took place! You might have already guessed it. We witnessed the predator/prey relationship. Talk about exciting!

Alright, I admit it. I have been chomping at the bit for the April Currently to surface. I thought, this month I am going to move up in the links. No more linking up as #100+
So what happened? While I was busy finishing a paper for my current doctoral course, Farley decided to get a jump on April. I think I still caught the wave earlier than usual but definitely not as close to the top as I wanted to be. Silly - I know. Maybe next time. For now, here is the April Currently. If you want to join in, check out

Allow me to elaborate. I have been listening to the movie that my kids are watching. Yes it is late, but hey ... we're all on Spring Break! Which is exactly what I am LOVING!! We often head to the beach for spring break, but this year we did not. I'm thinking it would be nice to spend at least a day or two at the beach before returning to school, so I am stalking our vacation points rental website in hopes that I will get lucky. I've been letting my hair grow for a long time and don't really want to get it cut, but definitely need to do something with it. As for the manicure, let's just say I treat my hands terribly and really enjoy a good manicure once in awhile.
Now on to the Science Olympiad. I seriously need to plan our activities for practice this week. Competition is a little less than two weeks away, so it is crunch time! We have to make the most of the 3 afternoon practices I scheduled during spring break.

As for my advice... don't underestimate yourself. If you don't put yourself out there, you'll never know what you are truly capable of. It won't be easy but it will be worth it! This advice applies to blogging, TpT, teaching, and life in general.

Now it's your turn. What are you "Currently" up to?
Our entire building just got new bulletin boards. Really big ones for right outside our doors in the hallway.
This was a wonderful donation but you know what it means when you get a big bulletin board. It must be covered. So I began the hunt for a fabulous idea. Here's what I ended up with and how I did it.

I covered the board with some wrapping paper from the dollar tree. It was pink with butterflies all over it. I used a boarder that had a white picket fence and flowers to finish off the edges at the top and bottom of the bulletin board. I found some laminated buggy accents and scattered them on the board.
I decided on the title: "Science Doesn't Bug Us!"
To make the title I used one of my favorite fonts and printed the letters. I cut the letters out to make my own letter templates and traced them onto a roll of bright blue contact paper. I cut the letters out of contact paper and outlined them with a black sharpie. Time consuming (ok - maybe) but I loved the end result. Since it is contact paper, it was really easy to stick onto the board right where I wanted each letter.

Next, I needed some student work for the board. I decided on 3 pieces to go with our Ecosystems unit.
1. One of the accent die cuts was a butterfly. I traced the butterfly on sheets of various colors of cardstock and cut them out before using the butterfly on the board. Next, I cut a slit in the middle of each butterfly. Half of them have a slit about 2 inches long coming up from the bottom while the other half have a slit about 2 inches long coming down from the top (between the antennas). This allows me to slide one butterfly down and the other up to create a 3 D butterfly. I gave each student one 3 D butterfly and instructed them to choose 2 science vocabulary words. They wrote each word on the front of one wing. Under the wing they wrote the definition and drew a picture.
2. 3 D energy pyramids were super easy to make. I gave each student a square of cardstock with a slit going from one corner to the middle, which allowed the square to overlap and create a pyramid. Students used their study guides and notebooks to show the flow of energy in an ecosystem.
I'm pretty happy with the way the board turned out and the kids had a lot of fun helping me get the board ready before spring break. It was a great review and kept them busy on a day that is often restless (you know what it's like right before a vacation...)

I'm including the letters for the title and a butterfly template in case you want to recreate this board. Hope this gives you some inspiration.
